Twelve national under-19 titles have gone to Varkenoord over the decades, and between 2010 and 2014 the academy was named the country's best five years running, taking the Rinus Michels Award in each of those seasons. That run followed a reorganisation in the summer of 2010, when Feyenoord's youth setup merged with Excelsior's to form what is now known simply as the Feyenoord Academy.

The senior club Feyenoord Rotterdam grew out of Wilhelmina, founded in 1908 and renamed four years later. Its own honours board runs to sixteen Eredivisie titles, a European Cup and an Intercontinental Cup from 1970, and two UEFA Cups. That pipeline is the point of Varkenoord: Robin van Persie, Georginio Wijnaldum and Willem van Hanegem all came through it before wearing the first-team shirt at De Kuip, and more recently Stefan de Vrij, Quinten Timber and Mats Wieffer have followed the same route out of the academy and into the senior side.

No fixture on the youth calendar carries more weight than the one against Ajax U19, known as the Mini-Klassieker.
