HNK Cibalia

The ground on the edge of Vinkovci holds 10,000. It went by Stadion Mladosti for years before it took the club's own name, and the sky-blue and white stripes have been the constant on it through every renaming that went on around them.

There were plenty of those. The club that took the field in May 1919 was called HGŽK Cibalia; it absorbed RŠK Sloga six years later, then spent the whole of the Yugoslav period as NK Dinamo Vinkovci before the old name came back in 1990. Under the Dinamo name it did its climbing: third division in 1975, the western group of the second in 1982, and with that second title the first season in the Yugoslav top flight.

Davor Čop belongs to those years. He came in 1984 and finished top scorer in the Yugoslav championship in 1985–86, left, came back in 1988 and stayed until 1994; a decade and a half later he was back again as manager for a season. Ivan Bošnjak passed through in the other direction — four years at Vinkovci from 1996, and then the Croatia squad that went to the 2006 World Cup.

The closest the club has come to a trophy of real weight was the 1999 Croatian Cup final, lost 1–2 to Osijek. Four years later came the Intertoto Cup semi-final, and VfL Wolfsburg ended that.

Since then the story has been the second division, won in 1998, 2005 and 2016.
