A district team in Novi Zagreb went by three different names before it found the one that stuck. Founded as NK Trnsko '75, the club became ONK Novi Zagreb within a year, then NK Novi Zagreb in 1990.

That changed in 1994. The club took the name Hrvatski Dragovoljac, after the volunteers of the Croatian War of Independence, and swapped its colours for black, worn in mourning for those who did not come home. The supporters who took it up call themselves the Black Warriors.

The renamed club found its best football soon after: a first Croatian Second League title arrived in 1994-95, and two more followed in 2012-13 and 2020-21, while three Zagreb Football Association Cups came between 2007-08 and 2017-18. Mario Bazina passed through on his way to Dinamo Zagreb and a Croatia cap; Srđan Lakić left for Eintracht Frankfurt.
