Montserrat Saldívar took the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot at the 2025 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, and by the time she made her senior debut for Mexico in 2024, she had followed a path through the youth side into the full national team. Karen Díaz and Mía Flores went the same way in 2019, goalkeeper and forward.

That line runs through the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, founded on 23 August 1927, and the team plays under the same green, white and red as the senior side, with the same borrowed nickname, El Tri. Mexico holds the record in the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship: fifteen titles stretching from 1962 through to 2026. The World Cup has proven harder — quarter-finals in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2022.

Ana Galindo took over on an interim basis in July 2022, was confirmed in the post the following year, and left in November 2024 having won the 2023 CONCACAF title and taken the side to the World Cup round of sixteen.
