New Zealand U20 Women

Emma Rolston left the 2014 tournament in Canada as top scorer, part of the run that carried New Zealand into the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. She was one of several to move straight on into the senior Football Ferns setup, a path also followed by Meikayla Moore and Daisy Cleverley, among others who wore the shirt first at this level.

Regionally the team has had little to fear. Nine OFC titles at this age group, in 2006, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2023 and 2025, leave New Zealand with no real rival for the honour in Oceania; the closest anyone has come was Australia, in the 2002 final that New Zealand lost. That fixture against the Young Matildas remains the one that matters most, played as a Trans-Tasman friendly rather than under any formal derby name.

Government of the side sits with New Zealand Football, and the squad carries the Junior Football Ferns name only since a rebrand in September 2007 brought it into line with the senior team's own identity. Leon Birnie took the side through the 2022 and 2024 cycles before Callum Holmes was appointed for 2026, by which point qualification for the World Cup had become close to routine: New Zealand have reached ten editions of the tournament, missing only the first two, in 2002 and 2004.

Kiwitea Street in Sandringham serves as the usual home ground, a tight 3,500-capacity setting a long way removed from the World Cup stages the graduates of this side go on to play under. It was there, and at grounds like it, that the run now stretching back to 1994 first took shape.
