The rivalry sharpened when Vanessa Djiogap left Cellini for Mestrino and went on to earn a place in the Italian national team.

The club grew out of the Istituto Cellini, the school that gave it both a name and, in red and blue, its colours. Promotion to the top flight came for the first time only after the 2019–20 season, when a second-place finish in Serie A2 Girone B was turned into a place in Serie A1 through the repêchage route, two years after the Girone C title had already signalled the team was outgrowing the second tier.

Staying there has proved harder than reaching it. Cellini went back down to Serie A2 in 2021–22 before working their way straight back up.

Home games are played in front of barely a hundred people at the PalaFarfalle.
