Plymouth U21

Adam Randell was still turning out for Plymouth's age-group sides when he broke into the first team at Home Park, one of several names the club's youth pathway has pushed forward in recent seasons alongside Luke Jephcott and Mike Cooper.

The U21s play under the same crest and the same green and white as the first team and compete in the Premier League Cup. The clearer signs of progress sit a level down: the U18s reached the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup in 2024–25, having gone as far as the quarter-finals back in 2007–08. Reuben Reid, Dan Gosling, Ben Purrington and Finley Craske all passed through the same rungs before finding first-team football, whether at Home Park or elsewhere.

Before the current age-group structure, development football at the club ran through the reserve side, which played in the Football Combination until 2011. What both generations of young players have fed into is a club that has never reached the top flight of English football despite five League One or Third Division titles along the way, the most recent arriving in 2022–23.

It began, long before any of that, as Argyle Football Club in 1886, turning professional in 1903 and entering the Southern League and Western League that year as Plymouth Argyle.
