Rubin

Rubin traces back to 1958, formed at Kazan's aviation plant No. 22, named after Sergei Gorbunov. The team played as Iskra until 1964, when it took the name Rubin — after a radar system fitted to the aircraft the plant built. A brief spell as Rubin-Tan came during the economic strain of the early 1990s, before the club settled back into the name it has carried since 1994. It has never left Kazan.

The red and green colours give the club its main nickname, Rubinovye, though supporters also call the side the Kazantsy. Two league titles, in 2008 and 2009, remain the high point of that identity — Rubin winning the Russian Premier League back to back. A Russian Cup followed in 2012, along with two Russian Super Cups either side of it, in 2010 and 2012.

On the pitch, geography draws the sharpest lines. Matches against Ufa carry the weight of the Tatar-Bashkir derby. Kazan has its own local rival too, in Sokol.
