Bárður á Steig Nielsen kept goal for VÍF when the club beat Dinamo Bucharest in the 1997/98 EHF Cup Winners' Cup, years before he became Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. Founded on 17 May 1939, with a men's handball section following in 1942, it has stood as the dominant force in Faroese handball almost without interruption.

The men's team has taken the Faroese League title 24 times, from 1948 through to 2021, and added the Faroese Cup on seven occasions and a Super Cup in 2023. The women's side has been nearly as consistent, with six league titles and four cups, the most recent of each in 2018.

Home games are played at Ítróttarhøllin í Vestmanna, a hall that holds 200. The rivalry with B36 Tórshavn and Kyndil carries no name of its own, which fits a club that has generally let the honours board do the talking.

What VÍF has not done is turn its domestic record into a lasting mark in Europe. The Dinamo Bucharest result in 1997/98 remains the club's best-known European night, and it stands alone rather than as part of a run.
