Yeovil Town

Two minutes from the end of the 2013 League One play-off final, Yeovil Town were a club that had never played higher than the third tier of English football. Then Dan Burn, a defender who had come through the club's own youth ranks, scored the goal that beat Brentford 2:1 at Wembley and put Yeovil in the Championship for the first time. Burn went on to Newcastle and Brighton; that afternoon belongs to Yeovil.

The club started in 1895 as Yeovil Casuals, playing at Pen Mill. It became Yeovil Town in the 1907/08 season. After the First World War it merged with Petters United, a works team founded in 1908, and spent over two decades as Yeovil & Petters United before reverting to Yeovil Town in 1946. None of that was straightforward progress — for most of the twentieth century the club sat outside the Football League altogether, a fixture of non-league football rather than a rival to it.

The breakthrough came in the early 2000s. In 2002, Yeovil beat Stevenage Borough 2:0 to win the FA Trophy, still the club's defining piece of silverware. A year later they won the Conference National title and finally reached the Football League for the first time. Huish Park, their home since 1990 and successor to the old Huish Athletic Ground, has held 9,565 for that climb and everything since — a ground built for a club still working out how far it could go.

Rivalries here run on geography rather than history. Bath City and Taunton Town supply the Somerset derby, sharpened by proximity and a shared sense of who the local team is meant to be. Weymouth adds a county edge to the fixture list. None of it carries the weight of a Wembley final, but it is the football that fills the calendar between the rare seasons when Yeovil reach for something bigger.
