Al-Shamal SC Stadium
Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar
The ground does not look like a standard stadium. It looks like a fortress, or at least a very ambitious attempt to recreate one. Al-Shamal SC Stadium sits in the desert landscape of Qatar, but its defining feature is the architecture. It is built to resemble the Zubarah Fort, a historic landmark in the area. The exterior walls are made of red bricks imported from India.
The building stands in Madinat ash Shamal, in the Al Shamal Municipality. Inside, the playing surface is natural grass, which is standard for the Qatar Stars League. The capacity has been adjusted over time; while it opened with 3,500 seats, it was later increased to 5,000.
It was not one of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but it did serve as a training ground for national teams during the tournament. The home club, Al-Shamal SC, has a history that predates the stadium itself, having won the Sheikh Jassim Cup in 1996 and multiple titles in the second division. The club’s official website is alshamal.qa, but the most striking aspect of the place remains its exterior. It is a red-brick structure that dominates the flat horizon, standing out against the sky and the sand.
