Alexandria Stadium

Alexandria Stadium stands in the Moharram Bey district.

What makes this ground different from the identical concrete bowls built later is its age. It is the oldest stadium in Africa, having opened in 1929. The stadium was built by the will of King Fouad I, and for decades it carried his name before the republic took over.

The stadium is small, holding just over thirteen thousand people, a fraction of the twenty-two thousand it could once fit. The capacity dropped after renovations in 2017, leaving the stands with more space between them.

It is the home of Al-Ittihad Alexandria Club, a club that has won the league title here. The ground has hosted the Africa Cup of Nations, including matches in 2019 when Nigeria played Guinea. It has also hosted concerts where hundreds of thousands gathered, spilling out from the gates onto the pavement. The pitch is natural grass, worn by decades of play.
