Angel Stadium
Anaheim, United States
Formerly: Anaheim Stadium, Edison International Field of Anaheim
The ground is a landscape of orange and grey, laid out in a shape that does not pretend to be anything else. It is a baseball field. It is cut from native soil, a rare arrangement that means the surface breathes with the ground beneath it, holding the humidity of Southern California in the roots.
If you look towards the outfield, away from the concrete seating, you will see a small pond. A few metres from the boundary wall, a bank of fake rocks rises up. It is an absurdity, a chunk of desert scenery dropped into the middle of a professional sporting venue, but it is there, and it is a landmark. When a hitter reaches for his pocket after the break and tries to drag a ball into the stands, the water waits.
The architecture is built in layers. The lower bowl is tight and angular, leading up to the open-air upper decks. It is a massive structure that once hosted football crowds, but the scale feels different now for the Los Angeles Angels. The stands are close enough to the field to catch the sound of the bat, yet far enough back to lose themselves in the geometry of the tiers. The lighting rig sits high and silent, ready to turn night into day.
There is a triangular frame visible in the sky above the main stand, a skeletal steel triangle that has stood since the modernisation of the scoreboard. It is an awkward shape against the clouds, a reminder of the 1990s rebuild that stripped away the old football configuration. The games played here now are played in peace, without the echo of the crowds that once filled the space for the Rams. The history between the teams is not in the ground, but in the way the locals treat the players.
