Ashton Gate is the only major ground in Bristol. It was built in 1887, originally for Bedminster FC, before Bristol City became the primary tenants in 1904.

The current structure is largely the result of a major redevelopment completed in phases leading up to the 2016–17 season. The project was funded by Stephen Lansdown, and the West Stand bears his name. The new South Stand replaced the Wedlock and Williams stands, while the Dolman Stand was extended, requiring the pitch itself to be shifted by 5 metres. The Lansdown Stand is two tiers high, housing the changing rooms and 18 executive boxes.

The venue hosts both football and rugby, using a HERO hybrid pitch that weaves synthetic fibres into the natural grass to ensure durability for heavy usage. The official all-seated capacity is 26,462, though the club frequently advertises the figure as 27,000. The ground has hosted notable events beyond local matches, including the 2019–20 Heineken Champions Cup Final in October 2020 and will serve as a host venue for the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup. It has also staged international rugby fixtures and hosted major concerts by artists such as The Rolling Stones and The Who.
