Built in 1972 for the local Coloured community, the venue has carried its original identity through every change in the city's fortunes.

The stadium sits at the corner of Cross Boulevard and Klipfontein Road, a location that places it firmly within the Athlone suburb rather than the city centre. It is owned and managed by the City of Cape Town, a fact that has kept the administration straightforward even as the tenant clubs have shifted through the years. Today, it is the home of Stellenbosch , a club that has found a base in a city that has hosted many other teams before them. It has also hosted Currie Cup matches for rugby, though the primary rhythm of the ground is set by football.

The pitch is natural grass, a surface that has struggled with the local climate, particularly during the droughts of 2017 when the ground reportedly dried into sand patches. Unlike the Cape Town Stadium, which hosted the tournament matches, Athlone served as a training venue for the 2010 World Cup. It has hosted a historic match with the Palestine National Team, which drew over 17,000 spectators, but the official attendance record is not established.
