The ground sits on an artificial mound. Its predecessor, El Arcángel, stood about 500 metres to the south from 1945. It opened on 7 November 1993.
That changed between 2005 and 2008: the track was taken out, the pitch shifted towards the west stand, and the west, north and south stands rebuilt as double tiers, with the north side finished in September 2008.
Spain have used it twice, beating Japan 1-0 in a friendly on 28 April 2001 and returning against Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on 15 October 2024. Both semi-finals of the 2021 Supercopa de España were staged here.
Work on the exterior began in 2024, with aluminium louvres and perforated stainless steel panels costing €1.3 million due to complete the facades in August 2026.
