Bank of America Stadium

Bank of America Stadium sits in Uptown Charlotte, inside the city's central business district. Wagner Murray Architects and Populous, then trading as HOK Sport, designed it; Turner Construction and F.N. Thompson built it for $248 million, and it opened on 3 August 1996 as Ericsson Stadium, the Swedish manufacturer having bought naming rights for ten years before the ground had even shed its working title, Carolinas Stadium. Bank of America took over in 2004, on a 20-to-25-year deal.

The pitch stayed Bermuda grass from opening day until the summer of 2021, when FieldTurf Vertex CORE, with built-in cooling, replaced it. Capacity has moved upward in increments rather than one expansion — a 2014 works programme added a new HD video board, four escalators and open-air party plazas — and now stands at 75,037. The stadium is shared: the Carolina Panthers since 1996, Charlotte FC of MLS since the club's founding.

Its attendance record, 74,514, was not set by the Panthers. Clemson and North Carolina drew that crowd for the ACC Championship on 5 December 2015, a fixture the stadium has hosted regularly since 2017. The mark held until 26 October 2024, when a sell-out crowd of 82,193 filled the stadium for Concert for Carolina, a benefit for victims of Hurricane Helene with Luke Combs, Eric Church, Billy Strings and James Taylor on the bill, raising more than $24.5 million in one night.
