The BayArena has changed its shape twice since the club moved in, and the two rebuilds tell most of its story. What opened in 1958 as the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, named for the Bayer AG director who founded the club, replaced two earlier grounds Bayer 04 had used since 1914, the Platz an der Dhünn and the Stadion am Stadtpark. A reconstruction between 1986 and 1997 converted the terraces to seating and settled capacity at 22,500.

The bigger change came between 2007 and 2009, when a second tier went up over the existing stands, new hospitality boxes were built in, and an oval canopy was fitted over the whole bowl. Capacity rose to its current 30,210.

The pitch is the other detail worth knowing. It runs on a Sporthybrid surface, natural turf reinforced with some 47 kilometres of synthetic fibre woven in for durability, and sits on undersoil heating.

The ground stands on Bismarckstraße.
