Stadium
Bukit Jalil National Stadium
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Formerly: TM National Stadium
Stadium Bukit Jalil is a place that looks like it has been turned inside out.
Before the ground opened in 1998, the UEM Group had a clear brief: build something to accommodate the Commonwealth Games. They removed the standing terraces and replaced them with seats, which dropped the capacity to 87,411.
The pitch surface tells a story of changing priorities. The surface is firm, which suits the game, but it is not heated. The ground is the home for the national team, but it is also the venue for the biggest finals in the country, from the Malaysia Cup to the AFC Cup.
There is a sense of scale that cannot be measured in seats. The stadium falls silent when the game is over.
