The Denka Big Swan Stadium is not defined by its age, but by its shape. The stadium was designed by the architectural firm Nikken Sekkei and opened on April 29, 2001, to serve as a venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The surface is natural grass. The stadium is the home ground of the J.League club Albirex Niigata. The track is not merely decorative; it allows the venue to host rugby union matches, such as the 2008 Asian Five Nations game between Japan and Hong Kong, without the layout being modified for different codes of football.
The stadium has undergone several name changes due to sponsorship rights, currently known as Denka Big Swan Stadium after Denki Kagaku Kogyo acquired the rights in 2013.
