Dreisamstadion
Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany
Formerly: Badenova-Stadion, MAGE SOLAR-Stadion, Schwarzwald-Stadion
For decades the Dreisamstadion stood where the city’s back garden meets the pitch, a place that outlasted its own club’s move. Built in the mid-1950s, the ground held the first team of SC Freiburg until the side shifted to a new home in 2021. It still looks like a stadium that was meant to last, and it mostly did.
What keeps it in the records is the 1974 World Cup, when six matches were played here, including the third-place playoff between West Germany and Yugoslavia. The pitch was natural grass. After the club left, the capacity was not raised further.
The ground has seen friendlies where Germany thrashed Liechtenstein 8–2 and drawn with Kuwait 7–0, moments that sit quietly in the archives.
