On 18 May 2014, during a La Liga match against Betis, a barrier in the south stand gave way; 68 people were hurt and the game stopped for 36 minutes.
Its first official FIFA fixture came on 5 June 2022, Argentina beating Estonia 5-0 with all five scored by Lionel Messi. Real Madrid had already used the place for a first: on 14 May 2008 they won 2-1 here and took the title on the night.
