Erdgas Schwaben Arena
Augsburg, Germany
Formerly: Augsburg Arena, Impuls Arena, SGL Arena
The venue in Augsburg that FC Augsburg call home is the WWK ARENA, a stadium that opened on 26 July 2009. It replaced the Rosenaustadion, after a construction period that began in November 2007. The cost of the project, including infrastructure contributions from the city and the state of Bavaria, reached €65 million, though the initial build sat closer to €45 million.
What makes the ground different is its approach to its own environment. It is noted for being climate-neutral, using deep ecological heat pumps and a biogas boiler to manage its energy requirements. The pitch itself, installed in 2016, is a hybrid grass surface with undersoil heating. The most striking visual element was added in 2017, a major renovation that gave the stands a distinctive illuminated facade consisting of anodized aluminum rods with integrated LEDs, funded by the naming rights sponsor WWK.
Capacity for league matches stands at 30,660, a figure that dropped to 28,367 for international fixtures following the construction changes. The attendance record remains that high-water mark of 30,662, set during the DFL-Supercup match between Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 on 7 August 2010. The arena has hosted matches during the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup and the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, including a quarter-final between Sweden and Australia. It has also seen the Germany national team play.
The address is Bürgermeister-Ulrich-Straße 90. The primary contractor for the original build was HBM Stadien- und Sportstättenbau GmbH.
