Estádio do Clube Desportivo das Aves
Vila das Aves, Portugal
The club built the ground itself, and it took the best part of a decade. A commission formed in 1970, the first stone went down on 14 June 1971, and Clube Desportivo das Aves — a modest club with modest means — opened the finished stadium only on 8 December 1981. No architect or contractor is recorded.
It opened with room for around 8,560. Promotion to the Primeira Liga brought rebuilding work in 2000 and again in 2006–07, when the central stands were enclosed. In 2023 the figure was set at 6,230, after seats went into the remaining uncovered areas and the boxes were requalified.
What sets the place apart is who holds the keys. CD Aves used it from 1981 until the SAD withdrew from the Campeonato de Portugal on 23 September 2020 over unpaid debts and a FIFA transfer ban, and the club ceased to exist. A phoenix club, Clube Desportivo das Aves 1930, followed in October 2020, but runs amateur and youth football and does not occupy the ground professionally. Its present tenant, AVS Futebol SAD, was founded on 5 May 2023 when the SAD of UD Vilafranquense moved north from Vila Franca de Xira — a separate company, sharing only the building.
Before UEFA Euro 2004, the France national team trained here.
