Estadio El Collao
Alcoy, Spain
Formerly: Campo Municipal El Collao
The roof over the main stand slopes sharply. Estadio El Collao sits in the Batoy neighbourhood of Alcoy, open to the elements until that cover provides shelter. The stands themselves are a mix of generations: the west side is a covered stand with seating, while the east side was rebuilt in 2007, replacing older covered steps that had served for decades. Between them lies a south terrace where the crowd can stand or sit depending on the day. The capacity hovers around 4,850.
What distinguishes the ground is its endurance. It opened in 1921, built on land donated by an industrialist and labour provided by soldiers from the Vizcaya Infantry Regiment. It is one of the oldest stadiums in Spain, yet it still holds the tie for Club Deportivo Alcoyano, the team that moved in shortly after its construction. The pitch is natural grass, stretched to 102 by 63 meters, a surface that has been replaced and irrigated several times, most notably in 2011 when the club reached the Segunda División.
The stadium has hosted matches in La Liga between 1945 and 1951. Floodlights stand ready for evening fixtures. The city council owns the venue, and recently announced a long-term investment plan to secure an opening license, ensuring the ground remains fit for purpose. The highest recorded attendance was approximately 4,700 for a 2022 Real Madrid match. The stadium is not a monument; it is a working ground.
