Opened on 16 January 1930 as Estadio Presidente Hernando Siles, it hosted its inaugural fixture that same day between The Strongest and Universitario, won 4–1 by the home side. What stood then was a 25,000-capacity complex that bundled the football pitch with an Olympic pool, a basketball court and a running track. The first structure lasted less than half a century: it came down on 2 January 1975, and the replacement, built by the SEPRA office and ICA for the 1977 Bolivarian Games, is the stadium standing today.

The 2007–2008 renovation, which installed plastic seating throughout, fixed capacity at its current 41,143. Bolívar, The Strongest and La Paz FC all play their home fixtures here.
