Estádio Mário Monteiro

Estrela do Norte Futebol Clube developed the ground from an open field into an enclosed venue, eventually building the walls that hold it together today. The club moved to the Sumaré neighbourhood in the 1930s, and the stadium was built around the same time. A local contractor, Mário Monteiro, led the earthworks, and the ground takes his name. The pitch measures 105 by 68 metres, cut from natural grass.

The Brazilian Football Confederation lists the capacity at 6,000, but old reports put the number much higher. Roberto Carlos played two concerts there, each time drawing a crowd that filled the terraces. The club’s return to the top division in 2001 brought more than 9,000 people through the gates. Recent upgrades have focused on safety, with an automated external defibrillator installed.
