Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez

Barranquilla's biggest stadium opened with a friendly, and lost the friendly. On 11 May 1986 Atlético Junior hosted Uruguay and went down 2-1, the first result recorded at the ground. The record crowd came years later, in December 1993, when Junior beat América de Cali on the way to their third national title and more than 60,000 people packed in past the stadium's official limit that season.

The naming came after opening. The ground was known simply as Estadio Metropolitano until 1991, when it was renamed Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in honour of the Colombian football figure.

A youth World Cup brought the most recent overhaul. Work carried out ahead of the 2011 Under-20 tournament, followed by a FIFA inspection, pushed capacity from an original 46,788 up to today's 49,612. The pitch itself has kept pace with that modernisation: Barranquilla installed a hybrid surface, more than 90% natural grass reinforced with synthetic fibres woven roughly 20cm deep.
