Some grounds are named for a donor or a district. On 17 April 1942 the board of Ceuta Sport, led by president Epifanio Ernandes, formally asked the city authorities to rename the ground after Alfonso Murube, a player at the club who died at Aranjuez during the Spanish Civil War. Before that it was the Campo Municipal de Deporte , and around the town it was simply the Docker — the nickname came from the military hospital barracks that stood by the entrance.

The pitch sits on Avenida de Otero, in Ceuta, the Spanish autonomous city on the North African coast.

The ground went through a long stretch of neglect before the rebuild, and it was a full reconstruction rather than a patch-up. It reopened on 8 October 1997 with a match between AD Ceuta and Algeciras CF. The surface today is synthetic.
