Estadio Municipal Joaquín Muñoz García

Santa Cruz keeps the oldest football ground in Chile, and the Estadio Municipal Joaquín Muñoz García does not hide it. It opened in 1920, and the pitch has hosted matches through more than a century of Chilean football history without ever chasing the scale of the capital's grounds.

The name honours Joaquín Muñoz García, one of the founders of the local club, who gave the land the stadium now stands on. That club traces back to 1913, when it was formed as Unión Comercio before becoming Deportes Santa Cruz, and the ground has stayed tied to that history ever since — the team still plays its home matches here, on the natural grass laid down at 21 de Mayo 198.

It is a modest venue by national standards, built for a provincial town rather than a metropolis, and it has never needed to be more than that. Its relevance travels beyond routine league fixtures too: the ground turns up in Copa Chile ticketing, drawing attention for a night or two before returning to its usual rhythm.
