Estádio Municipal José dos Santos Pinto

Covilhã, Portugal

The ground sits above Covilhã on high land, so the town spreads out below the terracing.

Its beginnings ran ahead of its completion. Building work went on from 1932 to 1934, and by February 1935 matches were already being played on a pitch that was not finished; a report in the local paper Jornal Notícias da Covilhã dated 3 February 1935 records football on the site before the official opening later that same year.

The name came from Sporting Clube da Covilhã, which proposed honouring José dos Santos Pinto.

Half a century after the opening, in 1985, the municipality carried out major reconstruction work: a new pitch was laid and the surrounding infrastructure improved. The playing surface remains natural grass, 105 by 64 metres.

The address, on Rua Sítio do Pinho do Gaiteiro, is settled; a reference to Rua Viriato that circulates alongside it belongs to another building. Which freguesia the ground falls under is not recorded in any accessible listing, and the stadium is generally located by the street alone.
