Estadio Municipal Leonel Sánchez Lineros
Recoleta, Chile
Formerly: Estadio Popular de Recoleta, Estadio Municipal de Recoleta
The ground on Avenida Recoleta was built out of a public collection. Money for it came through the state's push to put sports facilities into the working-class districts of Santiago, channelled by the Dirección General de Informaciones y Cultura and raised by the fundraising drive known as the Colecta O'Higgins . That origin is written into the first name it carried: Estadio Popular de Recoleta , the people's ground of Recoleta.
The name has moved twice since. Estadio Popular gave way to Estadio Municipal de Recoleta , and the municipality was still calling it that in 2019. By the middle of this decade the fuller title had settled: Estadio Municipal Leonel Sánchez Lineros . When exactly the change was made is not on record; only that it happened somewhere between those two points.
It is a municipal ground in the plainest sense.
One thing worth stating for anyone arriving: this is Recoleta in the Región Metropolitana, in Santiago itself. Chile has municipal grounds of near-identical name elsewhere, and the one on Avenida Recoleta is not among them.
