During the 2016–2018 rebuild, architect Giancarlo Mazzanti's team turned the field ninety degrees, shifting it from an east-west to a north-south layout to meet FIFA's orientation rules, while new east and west stands rose around it.
Junior FC called it home until 1986, when the club moved to the newly built Metropolitano; today Barranquilla FC, playing in the Categoría Primera B, is the tenant.
Colombia's footballers were crowned champions here at the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games, and the stadium later hosted 1966 World Cup qualifiers, Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana fixtures, and football at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.
Music has left its own mark.
