Estadio Regional Calvo y Bascuñán

The stadium sits on Avenida Angamos, the boulevard that gave it its everyday name, Coloso de Angamos. Construction began in July 1961 after a local committee, led by Alberto Calvo Nieto and Miguel Baquedano Bascuñán Pávez, raised the funds; the ground opened in October 1964 as the Estadio Regional de Antofagasta.

The renaming came later. A former mayor, Pedro Araya, revived the idea in 2010 of honouring the two men who had made the ground possible, and the change was formalised during a wider reconstruction under the Bicentenario programme, with the rebuilt stadium reopening under its current name, Calvo y Bascuñán, in March 2013.

That reconstruction paid off two years later, when the venue hosted three group matches at the 2015 Copa América — Venezuela against Colombia, Brazil against Peru, and Mexico against Ecuador — without ever staging the final itself. In July 1973, a match between Portuario de Antofagasta and Colo-Colo drew a crowd that still stands as the ground's record.

Deportes Antofagasta has called it home since 1966, the one constant through the renaming and the rebuilding. In 2020 the stands took on an unfamiliar role as a vaccination centre, and this year the municipality signed off on replacing the pitch with FIFA and World Rugby-certified artificial turf, ending six decades of natural grass.
