Europa-Park-Stadion

Standing on the edge of the airport at Freiburg im Breisgau, the Europa-Park-Stadion feels less like a neighbourhood fixture and more like a piece of infrastructure that has been dropped onto a forest clearing. The white roof slopes down to meet the tall white supports, and the glass front simply reflects the grey sky. In the distance, you can see the runway and the trees of the Breisgau hills, which makes the journey to a match feel longer than it is.

The ground replaced the old Dreisamstadion, which had served the club since 1954, but this was not a renovation. The old pitch was too small and had a gradient that made the ball run fast and straight. The new stadium was built on a different site, in the Brühl district, to accommodate a capacity of 34,700. The opening ceremony took place on October 7, 2021, after construction began in November 2018. The project was financed by the city, the state of Baden-Württemberg, and a silent partnership capital from SC Freiburg. The total cost was around €76 million.

The playing surface is hybrid grass, a technical solution that was not always reliable in the first season. When the pitch struggled to grow in the winter of 2021, roll-out turf was used as a temporary fix until the permanent surface was installed in July 2026. The stadium has hosted Germany national team matches and UEFA competitions under the old name Stadion am Wolfswinkel. The attendance record is 34,700, achieved in matches against FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen.

The most significant constraint on the ground is a 2019 court ruling regarding noise. Residents won a legal battle that banned Bundesliga matches after 8:00 p.m. and restricted Sunday afternoon kick-offs to between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. The dispute was settled in February 2022, allowing up to 18 night games per year, but the stadium is not designed for large concerts.
