Fenway Park
Boston, United States
Fenway Park has lived through the weather and the years in a way most venues do not. Between those two pictures, the structure has been patched and extended, but the bones remain.
What sets the place apart is the unevenness of the field and the height of the wall in right field. The green barrier sits closer to the plate than the fences in other parks, forcing outfielders to adjust their angles. That wall has also changed over time, with seats added on top of it during the last renovation, pushing the capacity up. The difference between day and night seating is simply a matter of a tarp, pulled over the centre field bleachers when the sun is out to give the batters a darker background. It is a small detail, but one that has persisted for over a century.
The ground has hosted sports that have no business being there: football, hockey, even boxing. The Rolling Stones and Lady Gaga have played the stage, and the Bruins have skated on the ice for the Winter Classic. Yet the baseball remains the core of the place. It is not a monument; it is a working ground that has simply refused to change too much.
