Gayfield Park
Arbroath, United Kingdom
Arbroath's ground sits close enough to the sea that a stiff easterly can turn a routine crossfield pass into a lottery. The pitch backs onto Queens Drive, hemmed in by the town rather than set apart from it.
The ground has carried the same name since it opened in 1880, even through a serious rebuild in 1925 that tore up the original pitch and shifted the playing surface some sixty yards along the road towards Dundee. A new stand went up with it, but nobody saw reason to rename a ground that had already stood for 45 years.
Capacity has fallen a long way from its historic peak of over 13,000, the reduction driven by safety regulations rather than demolition — standing areas were phased out rather than the ground shrinking physically. Arbroath F.C. have played here from the start, and the record attendance, set in February 1952 for a Scottish Cup tie against Rangers.
A 2022 refresh dealt with the frontage, ticket office and turnstiles rather than the bowl itself, and in 2023 the main stand took on a sponsor's name, CoelBrew Main Stand, without disturbing the ground's own identity. The pitch remains natural grass, as it always has.
