GAZi-Stadion auf der Waldau
Stuttgart, Germany
Formerly: Kickers-Platz, Kickers-Stadion, Waldau-Stadion
The GAZi-Stadion auf der Waldau sits in the Degerloch district. It is the home of SV Stuttgarter Kickers and VfB Stuttgart II. The ground has changed shape several times over its history. The main stand dates to 1976 and replaced a wooden terrace that was itself a copy of Arsenal’s old Highbury stand. That earlier terrace was built in 1913, the same year the club had been playing on a military exercise ground since 1904. The pitch sits at an altitude of roughly 500 metres.
The reduction came with a €14.6 million renovation between 2014 and 2015, which added a new southern stand and replaced the opposing roof two years later.
The club’s history is written in the walls: a German Bowl final in 2007 drew 8,152 spectators, more than the 8,000 who turned out for a friendly against Switzerland in 1911. Now it is known by the dairy company Garmo AG, who bought the naming rights in 2004. Before that, it was the Waldau-Stadion, and before that, simply Kickers-Platz.
