GGW Arena

The GGW Arena sits in the Sandberg district of Flensburg.

The structure has a history of its own. It opened in 2001 as the Campushalle. Over time, the branding has shifted—Flens-Arena, GP JOULE Arena, and now the GGW Arena—but the building remains a constant presence in the city. The interior is dominated by the seating, which rises steeply from the sidelines, creating a sense of intimacy that is unusual for a venue of this size.

The crowd here is different from the football terraces down the road. This is a handball arena, and the noise is generated by a different kind of aggression. The SG Flensburg-Handewitt play their matches here, and the atmosphere can be intense when they face their rivals from Kiel. The capacity is listed at 6,300, but the arrangement of the seats makes it feel smaller, more enclosed. There are standing-room sections along the sides, which were noted as the largest in the German Handball Bundesliga when the venue first opened.

The surface is wood and PVC, not grass, and the players move across it differently. The roof is a truss structure that spans the entire width of the building, leaving no open sky overhead. The arena has been renovated several times, most recently around 2021, but the core design has not changed. It is a functional space, built for sport and events, with no pretence of being anything more. The location is unassuming, tucked away in a district that is neither fully urban nor entirely quiet.
