Gwangju World Cup Stadium

The Gwangju World Cup Stadium is defined by its roof. It is a single, long arch that sweeps over the main stand, closing the space against the sky. Behind that curve, the seats form a wall.

The ground was built for a tournament that changed the country’s football. Forty-two thousand one hundred and fourteen people filled the seats for the quarter-final between South Korea and Spain in 2002.

For years, the house was shared. Gimcheon Sangmu played here before moving on, leaving the space for Gwangju FC to arrive in 2011. The club needed a proper home, so the track was removed and the stadium became a football-specific venue. The work was done in time for the club’s debut in the K-League. Later, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2015 Summer Universiade, though the details of that investment are sparse.

Most recently, the club returned to this ground after a short loan at the Gwangju Football Stadium. The AFC Champions League Elite required the venue to meet certain standards, so repairs were made to the locker rooms, media facilities, and the pitch itself. The cost of those fixes is not on record.
