The date on the gate matters more here than the size of the ground. On 9 November 1986 Hibernians opened the first football pitch in Malta owned outright by a club rather than rented from the association or the state.

The pitch is a POWERgrass hybrid: Bermuda grass whose root zone is stitched through with synthetic fibre.

It went by Hibernians Stadium from the 1986 opening until June 2021. Tony Bezzina, a former president of the club, died in March 2021; at the annual general meeting on 6 June 2021 the members voted unanimously to rename the ground after him, and it has been the Tony Bezzina Stadium since.
