Hódos Imre Rendezvénycsarnok
Debrecen, Hungary
Formerly: Városi Sportcsarnok
The Hódos Imre Rendezvénycsarnok is not a football stadium, yet it sits in the shadow of one. The Főnix Aréna stands next door, a modern football hall, but this older building has kept its purpose. It is an indoor sports hall in Debrecen, built for handball and basketball.
The building itself is the first thing to note. It connects to the newer arena below ground, but that corridor is not visible from the street.
It has been here since 1976. The hall was originally called the Városi Sportcsarnok, but the city renamed it after Imre Hódos, an Olympic wrestling champion. It has been updated since then.
The main events held here are not football matches. The women’s handball team DVSC Schaeffler plays their home games on this floor. The hall has also hosted the European Karate Championship and the World Cup for under-19 women’s basketball. It is a place for indoor sports, for concerts, and for local meetings.
