Kauffman Stadium

Kauffman Stadium is a baseball park in Kansas City, Missouri. The park opened in 1973 as the home of the Kansas City Royals and was renamed in 1993 to honour Ewing Kauffman, the founder who passed away the year before. It remains the only stadium in Major League Baseball (MLB) named after an individual. The field itself is covered in natural grass, a mix of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, laid down in 1995 after years of artificial turf. A significant renovation between 2007 and 2009 modernised the interior, widening concourses and adding the CrownVision video board. That work also trimmed the seating capacity to 37,903, down from the original 40,625. The Royals have won two World Series titles here, in 1985 and 2015, and the single-game attendance record of 42,633 was set on October 9, 1980, during the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. Nolan Ryan threw his first no-hitter at the ground on May 15, 1973, just weeks after it opened. The park has also hosted the MLB All-Star Game twice, in 1973 and 2012, and hosts college fixtures between the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri. The attendance record has stood since 1980, though the capacity has been reduced since then.
