Keyworth Stadium does not belong only to Detroit City FC. Before the club existed, before the artificial turf, the ground opened on 15 October 1936 as one of the first Works Progress Administration projects finished in Michigan, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt himself spoke at the ceremony, mid-campaign for a second term. That New Deal footing sets it apart from most American soccer venues its size, which tend to arrive as private developments rather than public works.

The address sits the ground inside Hamtramck, a city fully enclosed by Detroit, which gives the venue an odd status: a stadium in one municipality, surrounded on all sides by another. Detroit City FC has called it home since 2016, after outgrowing Cass Technical Stadium, and the club replaced the playing surface with artificial turf in 2019 to handle the wear of regular fixtures.

What comes next changes the picture entirely. Detroit City FC is preparing a move to a new build, AlumniFi Field, rising in Corktown on the site of the old Southwest Detroit Hospital. Where Keyworth carries the New Deal history, AlumniFi Field starts with none of it — no former name, no decades of tenancy, just a 2028 opening date and a capacity built for a club that has already outgrown its current ground once before.
