Kingsholm Stadium sits at the end of a quiet stretch of road in the Kingsholm district, where the ground’s boundaries are marked by a perimeter fence rather than a wall or a river. The most striking feature of the playing surface is the pair of tall, red-and-white rugby posts that rise above the pitch, a reminder that this is a dual-purpose venue rather than a pure football ground. The stands themselves are a mix of old and new; the modern, angled white facade of the main stand contrasts sharply with the lower, more traditional brickwork of the covered terraces surrounding the field.

The site has been in use since 1891, when Gloucester Football Club purchased the land from the Castle Grim Estate. Since then, the ground has evolved alongside the game it hosts, most notably undergoing a significant rebuild in 2007 to replace the original main grandstand with a new all-seated structure to meet safety regulations. Before that, the site had already seen its share of changes, including the rebuilding of a wooden stand after a fire in 1933 that became known as "The Shed". The current capacity is 16,115, a figure that reflects the gradual expansion of the seating areas over the decades rather than a single moment of construction.

What makes the place distinct from other grounds in the city is the way it accommodates two codes of rugby. The presence of the tall upright posts on the pitch signals that the surface is treated for both football and rugby, a necessity given the weather and the history of the club. The modern exterior of the main stand, with its clean lines and glass panels, houses the club shop and bar, while the older stands provide a more enclosed, sheltered view of the action. The ground has hosted matches in three different Rugby World Cups, but its identity is rooted in the local community and the long-standing presence of the club on this specific plot of land.
