La Catedral
San Isidro, Argentina
The original structure was timber, a roofed grandstand bought from a defunct cricket club and put up in 1912. That frame burned down in 1927, and the concrete tribuna principal rose from the ashes shortly after. That single wall of stone sets the place apart.
The ground sits on Roque Sáenz Peña street, on land ceded by the owner of a large estate in Acassuso. It is the home of the club founded in 1902, which is why the official name is Estadio CASI.
The grass on the rugby pitch is natural, unlike the synthetic surface provided for hockey a few years ago. The capacity is a matter of how much is added on match day. The permanent concrete tribuna holds around 3,000 people, but for the big matches, such as the finals or the Clásico against San Isidro Club, the club stacks temporary tubular stands along the flanks of the main wall.
That advertising is gone now, but the geometry of the concrete steps remains unchanged.
That is what the place is: a concrete bowl for rugby, nothing more, nothing less.
