Legion Stadium
Wilmington, United States
Legion Stadium sits inside the Legion Sports Complex on the edge of Greenfield Lake, a site the local American Legion post handed over to New Hanover County so the Works Progress Administration could build a stadium as a Depression-era jobs project. That origin still shapes how the ground reads: a public works venue rather than a club's home, built for a community rather than for one tenant.
Wilmington Hammerheads FC used it that way, moving in for their USL seasons across two spells, first from 2003 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2016, before the club's run at the stadium ended. Long before that, UNC Wilmington's baseball team played home games there through the 1950s to 1980s, and New Hanover High School has kept using the venue for its own fixtures, a reminder that Legion Stadium has rarely gone quiet even when it lacked a marquee occupant.
With no professional side currently calling it home, the stadium's identity rests on that layered history rather than on a resident club's fortunes.
