Lohrheidestadion

The Lohrheidestadion sits in Bochum-Wattenscheid. It is a place that has always been split between two sports, not one. The track that still rings the natural grass pitch gives it a shape that sets it apart from the all-purpose arenas built for football alone.

It opened in 1954 as a combined athletics and football stadium, built on earth embankments. The local club SG Wattenscheid 09 moved in for football in 1965, and TV Wattenscheid 01 claimed the athletics side the same year. The ground has not changed its name for sponsorship, so the original title remains. A new east stand was completed between 1991 and 1992, which pushed the capacity towards 20,700 before the most recent changes. VfL Bochum II used the ground for their matches from 2008 to 2015 before moving to the Vonovia Ruhrstadion.

The track is a running surface, and the terraces are simple and uncovered. The capacity was adjusted to 16,387 following a major modernization project that concluded in 2025.

It has hosted the German Athletics Championships on several occasions, including 2002 and 2005. The record attendance of 23,400 is associated with a DFB-Pokal match against Hamburger SV in 1974. More recently, it served as a training camp for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and hosted the athletics events for the Summer World University Games in July 2025. On November 16, 2025, the venue hosted an international American football match between Germany and Canada for the Gridiron Nations Championship.
