Malmö Arena

The ground looks nothing like its neighbours in Malmö. While the football clubs play on grass, Malmö Arena sits in the Hyllie district for indoor sport and concerts. It opened in 2008 to replace the old Isstadion and now hosts the Malmö Redhawks.

You can see the difference immediately. Inside, the versatility is the point. The floor transforms from a hard court for handball to ice for the hockey team, allowing the venue to pull in crowds for different sports and Melodifestivalen heats. It hosted the Eurovision Song Contest twice, once when Denmark won in 2013 and again recently when Switzerland took the prize. That international attention, along with the pop concerts, keeps the building busy beyond the hockey season.

The capacity is fixed for the sports events, though the layout changes for the larger concerts. The building retains its straightforward name, Malmö Arena, because the city secured the naming rights early on to keep the local identity in the title. It is a modern replacement for the older venue, designed to be a multi-purpose hub for the city rather than a single-purpose football ground.
