Městský stadion Štětí

The Městský stadion Štětí sits at the end of Čs. armády street. It is not a place of grandeur or light; there are no floodlights to chase away the grey skies, and the stands offer little shelter from the wind that sweeps down from the north. The main stand is a single block of metal benches, bare enough to let the cold in, while the rest of the ground opens up to the sky, undeveloped and quiet.

What defines this place is not its current state, but the memory of the 1980s. Back then, when SK Štětí played in the second national league, the capacity was not 1,500 but closer to 8,000. The number 2,000 was common for those league matches, a figure that now seems impossibly large for a ground that has seen its crowds shrink alongside the fortunes of the club. The capacity has since been scaled back, reflecting a town that has changed its shape and its priorities.

The pitch itself is natural grass, a proper surface that requires maintenance rather than the convenience of artificial turf found on the secondary pitch nearby. This is a community ground, hosting the fireman competitions and youth tournaments when the senior team is not playing. It lacks a commercial name, standing simply as the Městský stadion, tied to the street name that speaks of a past era. The construction details are lost to time, attributed vaguely to the local paper mill club in the 1960s, but the ground remains a fixture of the district. It is a place where the atmosphere is defined by absence as much as presence — the empty seats that once held thousands, the darkness of the evening training sessions without lights, and the quiet dignity of a stadium that has survived without fanfare.
